ADVANCED FLIGHT
November 1943 to January 1944
  return to advanced flight

Dear Mother,

Well, all my hopes and dreams came true - that is, about flying. We left Independence Wednesday afternoon by Pullman and arrived here late Thursday. By the way, this is Ellington Field, Texas - I believe that Junior Penny graduated from here. This is mainly a twin engine advanced flying school, but has a sideline consisting of pre-flight for bombardiers and navigators and advanced work for navigators.

We will fly A.T.-10's, which is a large twin engine plane quite similar to the transports you see at Lunken, only about 3/4 as big.

So far things have been swell. We spent the morning having our pictures taken for the Randolph Field records and unpacking our luggage. Our barracks are fine, large, two-story affairs - plenty of room and good beds. Really, I hardly can believe that I actually made it "to Advanced." It's been a dream so long that I keep pinching myself to see if I'm really awake.

We have lots of freedom here on the post - eat whenever we wish - the officers treat us almost as brother officers. That's mainly because we've gone through so much to get this far and will actually be officers in about 9 more weeks.

I have to attend some sort of a lecture this afternoon, so must close for now. My new address is on the envelope.

Lots of love,
Jack
