BASIC TRAINING March 1943 to April 1943
Dear Mother,
Last Thursday I had an open post and went into town with Priestley, Morris and Palcich. The first thing we did was have our pictures taken. During this ordeal, I had my first taste of "S.A." hospitality. Every person in San Antonio tries to take every soldier for his money. Out of my money, I had kept only $15.00 and three pictures cost me $10.00. Transportation to and from cost $1.00 and meals, a show and a telegram shot the rest. So at the moment, I have 18 cents to my name. I swore that I wouldn't write home for money, but it is really a necessity that I do so. If possible, wire me about $20.00 will you? I ought to have about that much left. I got home from the open post at 9:30 and went to bed. The most I can say about San Antonio is that it is a very pretty town. We saw the Alamo, which was quite interesting. Friday morning was spent rehearsing for the show and Friday afternoon I sang for a military wedding at the church, then more rehearsing. Saturday morning I sang for another wedding. For both weddings I sang, "Because" and "I Love You Truly." Then more rehearsing Saturday afternoon and evening. Sunday morning I sang a solo in church. It was just a hymn and the rest of the evening was rehearsing. We rehearsed until 2:00 a.m. The next day was spent in cleaning up odds and ends for the show, which we gave Monday - quite a way to spend your birthday, isn't it? However, the show turned out to be a great success. So I got up this morning to find myself on guard duty. Thanks a lot for the diary and nuts. The nuts certainly disappeared in a hurry. I got a cake from Grandma today - naturally it's wonderful. And the opera creams - nothing needs to be said.
I'll be leaving here the latter part of this week. Where to? I don't have the least idea. At least I'm not supposed to know where we're going, but a strong rumor has it that we'll go to the San Antonio Pre-Flight School - which is about 1 mile from here. All of the navigators and bombardiers moved out today. Nobody knows where they went to - but it most probably is Ellington Field, Texas. Well, that's about all for now. But, I'll write tomorrow.
