CPL. JOHN LOWELL BURKHEAD
April 24, 1944
Dear Mom and Dad, I have been assigned to a B-24 as a ball turret man. I will be here 10 weeks and from then on I don't know what I will do or when I will go. We have it pretty good out here. I mean on passes, we have a class A pass and can be in town any time that we aren't on duty. We have to work pretty hard here. Some days we work from 2 am until 7 pm and again on other days we have it easy. Our crew is a good bunch of boys and our pilot is a swell guy. He is from Ohio and I like him fine. I am now getting $31 more a month than I was. I did get $21.60 a month (that doesn't include Telva's allotment) and now I get $52.10 and in ten weeks I will get more. In ten weeks I will get $117 a month for my pay and Telva will still get her $50 so in all I will get $167 a month. That is including her allotment. I will be a buck sergeant then. How is dad and his job getting along? How is Marie? How was LenRay? Did he get to see Wayne before he left? What kind of an outfit did Wayne get into? Where did he go to? Mom I wish that you would give my address to the paper so that I could get them. I am sending for Telva as soon as I can get a place for her to stay. I hope that she is in good health because it is a long trip out here. Mom I haven't been writing you as often as I should have lately but I have traveled about 4,000 miles here lately and I haven't had very much time to do anything so if I don't write you as often as I should please don't worry about me because I can take care of myself and I will be all right. But I will try and write as much as I can.
John
