PREFLIGHT TRAINING
April 1943 to June 1943
  return to preflight training

Dear Mother,

This Sunday is Mother's Day, so I'm going to try to get a phone call through tonight. Don't know whether I'll have any luck or not. I imagine that you have received my "pictures" by now. I hope that you aren't too disgusted with me because of my little "game." I realize that the large pictures aren't too good, but it was the best that I could do in "dear ol' San Antonio." What a town!!

Today marks my second week in pre-flight. Seven more weeks and I'll be in Primary. It certainly seems that we go through a lot of "red tape" to get behind the controls of a plane. But, I guess that it's all for the best.

The upperclassmen had an open post today, so we "lowly dogs" had a little spare time to write. We got paid yesterday, so I'm enclosing a little money in this letter. You know what to do with it - Purdue, here I come!

It certainly has been a hot one down here today. I think the sun "tanned or browned" me a little more, if that's possible.

Now I'll try to answer some of your questions. A brace is something that you can't get into, but you do. Sometimes they call it posture correction. A person can't hold a brace very long. Really, it is a means of torture in this century. It's true that we aren't supposed to laugh at any time, but sometimes you just can't help smiling. Just sneak it in on the sly - but if caught, it certainly goes hard.

I'm sorry to hear about Mary and Mac's misfortune. I haven't seen Gil for a week now, so I haven't heard his end of the story - he's in Group VII, Squadron 2, Flight E. I did get the sunglasses and I thought that I thanked you for them - if not, thanks! These sunglasses are quite sufficient.

Well, I must get back to studying, so....

Lots of love,
Jack
