PREFLIGHT TRAINING
April 1943 to June 1943
  return to preflight training

Dear Mother,

Now that I'm an upperclassman, you can expect mail regularly. Really, I didn't have a bit of time to write during the last four and a half weeks. But everything is fine now.

I saw Charles last night and he was telling me that Edith came out here to see him. He's very much disgusted, as she has been chasing him all over the post - even tried to get a regular pass to get in here to see him! He really thinks that it's plenty cheap - that is, the way she's chasing him around. I think so also.

I had my first open post last Sunday. I saw a show and went to a dance given for us pre-flight cadets. It was really very nice. I met a real nice girl named Mary at the dance. I can't remember her last name. I took her to dinner, and we walked around that evening. I won't see her again, as she was only visiting in town. But that's life. I'll be in town again this Friday and will try to call you.

My studies and grades are just as wonderful as ever. My average right now is hovering around 99.7%. Not bad, if you ask me! There's no one close to me in my group when it comes to academics.

I didn't try out to be a cadet officer because it takes too much time. There's something sadly comical about our new cadet officers - most of them are failing at least one subject. They're just the fellows that should have my outlook, but they would rather have a little glory now and worry later.

Right now I'm taking 11 words of code per minute, which is the highest in the entire group. The instructor told me I didn't have to go to class anymore if I didn't want to, but I'm going ahead and raise my quota. A cadet must take 8 words per minute to pass and about 3/4 of the class can't take over 5 words right now. So I'm still "setting pretty."

Well, that's about all for now - will write tomorrow.

Lots of love,
Jack
