PREFLIGHT TRAINING
April 1943 to June 1943
  return to preflight training

Dear Mother,

Time certainly does pass fast! Here it is June already - means that I've been in the Army three months - seems more like three weeks. My grades are still as good as ever - physics is 100% so far and only two more exams to go. It would be pretty good if I could pull a hundred average in this course. It's never been done in this group before. And what's more, I've taken all the code that can be given here at pre-flight - 14 words per minute. It just seems that I'm a natural for code. The rest of the fellows are struggling to pass an 8 word check and me floating along taking 14 words.

The instructor told me that I only needed 12 words to pass code at advanced school. So - I'll never worry about that. I've been kept busy teaching also. I guess that you never thought that I'd be a teacher. Most of the fellows here are having trouble with physics, so by request of the Squadron Commander, I am conducting physics classes about every other night in one of the classrooms. On the odd nights, the class is taught by Don Badiker - remember him? He went to U.C. with me. So, don't ever let anyone say that the U.C. boys aren't making good in pre-flight.

I had an open post last Friday and had a very nice time. Had a blind date with a girl named Jean Whitney. Very surprising to me, she turned out to be a very nice, charming and I must say, pretty girl. I noticed right away that she didn't have one of these southern "drawls," so I inquired about it. Anyway, she's from Elkart, Indiana, and knows quite a few people in Cincinnati that I know. She just came to San Antonio three weeks ago with her family because of her father's health - something like Doc Simmons.

Anyway, we danced, took in a couple of shows and just generally had a good time all day. I have another open post this Friday and have another date with her. It's really nice to meet someone from your own part of the country - seems like you know them better at first sight.

I guess you know that Edith is down in San Antonio. She comes out to see Charles about every other day - or tries to see him. I consider her a very crude individual - and also very much out of line for a decent girl! Really, there's no sense in her chasing Charles like this. But when Edith wants to get married, I guess Edith will do most anything to get married. But Charles is still using his head. He told me all of this last night. Also more news - last Sunday an order came through from Washington abolishing the "class system" at all Pre-Flight Schools. So an upperclassman no longer rightfully has any power over a lowerclassman. But you'd be surprised - they still do.

I'll be moving to Primary about June 28 - where - I haven't the least idea. But wherever it is, I think I can do O.K. Must close now.

Love,
Jack
