  return to primary flight

Dear Mother,

I'm not doing much nowadays. I finished flying last Tuesday and since then have just been loafing during our flying time. My total time that I take to Basic with me is 67 hours and 13 minutes, which is about 4 hours above the average. Yesterday we had our final exam in air navigation - I finished the course with a 96 average. Tomorrow, we will have our final in Engines. The course in Engines has proven to be quite easy for me because of the stuff I learned while working for Wright Aero.

I got a letter from Betty today - says she has been sick in bed with the flu. From the letter, I gather that she is finally getting the "drift" of the situation. But she certainly is stubborn when it comes to giving up!

We are scheduled to leave Pine Bluff Monday afternoon - heading for Independence, Kansas. According to the rumors, we are going to fly B.T. 14's, which are by far the best in Basic Trainers. I hope that the rumors are right.

Last night we had our graduation dance. I had a date with Betty - certainly had a swell time. By the way, she says that she thinks she saw you in the Coffee Shop Monday, but wasn't certain that it was you, so didn't speak. She is quite typically southern. Said that she was just afraid that you might be someone else and both of you would be embarrassed.

We also saw a movie last night - "Random Harvest." I thought that it was quite good.

All of us are starting to pack our things for the trip. I guess that we're all eager to get into a B.T. I know that I am, anyway.

Well, I'll have to close for now as it's time for supper.

Lots of love,
Jack
