  return to primary flight

Dear Mother,

I had the opportunity to call you last night, so just went right ahead. It only took about 1/2 hour delay and the connection was excellent, so I consider it a very "good deal."

I haven't too much news, that is, interesting news to write about. I took my progress check last Monday and passed it O.K. This seemed to please my instructor - there are lots of fellows who failed their progress ride and were checked into traffic. So far I'm still out of traffic and haven't had any kind of air indication that my instructor might wash me.

I didn't get into town last weekend as we had to fly on Sunday. Personally, it didn't make any difference with me, but some fellows were highly "put out" because of Sunday flying. Also there's a rumor that we might fly this Sunday as the class as a whole is slightly behind schedule.

I got another crazy letter from Uncle Bobby. He certainly is an artist when it comes to being a crazy letter writer. I'll send it on to you. I sort of imagine that you'll get a kick out of it like I did.

I'm looking forward to seeing you on the 15th and 16th of this month. I'm sure that you can find good accommodations at the Pines Hotel. Also, I'm going to try to get a special pass so that you can get in the field and look it over. But, that's going to be a hard job - chances are about 100 to 1 against me.

Well, it's time to head for the flight line and do a little buzzing. After today, I'll have about 34 hours, which is enough time to get a private pilot's license in civilian life. Flying time certainly mounts up in a big hurry when you fly for the Army. I only have 30 more hours to put in here at Primary and flying 2 and 1/2 hours a day will take care of that in short order.

Time to close.

Love,
Jack
