TRANSITION TRAINING January 1944 to March 1944
Dear Mother, I haven't written since the last time I was up - so you can easily tell that we haven't been doing any flying. Seems as though there is some sort of a defect in the nose wheels of our 24's, so all of our ships have been grounded lately and the nose wheels rebuilt. All new, improved parts - supposed to be quite a lot easier handling than the old nose wheels. I finally got paid last Sunday, but I couldn't get my check cashed until this afternoon. I certainly hope that this letter gets home all right - be rather expensive if something should happen to it. Also, today I signed my pay voucher for February. From all that I can gather, seems as though I should clear around $240.00 for this month. Sounds pretty good - doesn't it? I'm afraid I've sorta been "burning the candle" at both ends lately. Last night I had a date with an awfully cute blonde named Ann Henderson. Seems as though the little cuties here in Fort Worth are extremely eager to date us Lieutenants. Since I've been here, I've had loads of dates. Last night with Ann, then within the last two weeks, dates with girls named Joyce Davis (redhead), Dorothy Keeman and Jerry Kerr. The last girl has a '41 Ford, so I usually call her before proceeding with the rest of the list! No kidding, Mother, I'm going to expect you to come down here sometime during the first part of March. It will be quite easy for me to finance a plane trip for you, so you just can't get out of it. And, if you folks feel that you can add just a little to my surplus funds, we might possibly get more than just you down here. I'm starting to skimp right now - only one cheap date for me each week from now on.
We were scheduled to fly tonight - but, since we have no planes, we have no flying. Mom, I've found a swell friend here at Tarrant - a Lieutenant named Alex Burhart. He was at Ellington, but I didn't know him very well at the time. But, we've become solid buddies lately - it's necessary to have a good friend. Alex is my age and has his home in Monroe, Michigan. Well, I'm going to have to close for tonight, but I'll write again soon. Now, don't worry about me and these Texas "golddiggers." I understand them completely, know exactly what they're after and therefore, am quite safe. Jo Ruth is staying in Houston like a good girl - she keeps trying to come up here but - "little Jack" knows best.
Lots of love, |
