  return to transition training

Dear Mother,

Bet you're surprised to hear from me way out here in New Mexico. Frankly, I'm quite startled to be here. Anyway, here's the scoop. Seems as though the big dogs back in Fort Worth expected some bad flying weather, so they decided to send a few of us students out here to try and finish up our flying. Howard Boos, my instructor and myself brought one of our B-24's out here to Kirkland Field to fly from here for a few days.

We're living in town because they don't have facilities to take care of us at Kirkland Field (that's the name of the airport here). This country out here is really beautiful. To come here we had to cross a mountain range - really, we flew in a narrow pass between the ridge. The town and airport are located in a valley completely surrounded by mountains. As you know, this is the first time I've ever really seen any full-grown mountains. They are plenty beautiful.

There isn't much to the town of Albuquerque - the population is about 1/2 Mexican and the other half cowboys - and I DO mean real, live cowboys! The main street is mostly cheap looking saloons - can't hardly find a decent place to eat. However, our hotel isn't too bad - the place just smells like ammonia constantly.

Well, I'm going to close for tonight. I can't tell you that good news as yet, because it's still just a big chance. But, if anyone gets to be an instructor, it should by all rights be me. Here's hoping.

Lots of love,
Jack
