Dear Mother,

Here I am way out in California. Our trip was rather strenuous, but I'm feeling just fine after a good night's sleep. Well, everything went off just perfectly. My plane was about a half hour late in coming into St. Louis, but that made no difference. Cammask and Burhart were at the airport waiting for me, so we piled into the car and started for Fresno.

The trip as a whole was wonderful. Of course, a few flat tires marred the beauty slightly. We came through the Painted Desert and the Petrified Forest, and lots of Indian reservations. The mountains in Arizona and California were really beautiful. The driving in the Dead Mountains was rather "rough," but we enjoyed the scenery.

We arrived here Monday noon - that means we drove 2100 miles in 60 hours, which includes stopping for gas and food. I think that we made rather good time. We followed the southern route - down through Oklahoma City, Amarillo, Texas, Albuquerque, across Arizona and into California through the Mojave Desert.

I haven't quite figured out what is to happen here. I know that we won't do any flying here at Fresno and from all present rumors, we should be shipped to another field within two weeks. However, I'm to pick a crew within the next few days - that is the most important thing to be done.

Soon as I find out more, I'll tell you what goes. I've located my suitcase - it was in Fort Worth just like I thought. I wrote to the station attendant and he's shipping the suitcase to me collect. So everything should turn out O.K.

It's time to eat, so...

Lots of love,
Jack
