TRANSITION TRAINING

  return to transition training

Dear Mother,

Right now your son is an extremely confused little boy. When I came to Fresno, I thought I knew, or had some idea, what was to happen. But right now I've lost all faith in trying to understand the ways of the Army. Here's why - when I left Fort Worth, I was assigned to the Fourth Air Force here at Fresno. We've been here for about five days now, and absolutely nothing has happened until today. But this afternoon some big shot comes and tells us that we've been transferred to another Air Force - what one he doesn't know. This movement will involve about a hundred men, 50 first pilots and their co-pilots.

We're to leave for Lincoln, Nebraska this Sunday or Monday - as yet we don't even know what field to report to there. But anyway, we're to go there. Burhart and Cammask are going also, so I guess that everything will be O.K. Soon as I find out something more about the movement, I'll tell you. But I'm plenty glad to leave California. The people out here are quite strange - Burhart and I just don't like the place. And Lincoln, Nebraska is much closer to home than California. In fact, I think that this will be the closest to home that I've been stationed.

Can't much tell what sort of a deal we're going into. We're taking our co-pilots with us, but no navigators or bombardiers. I don't think that Lincoln has any connection with the Second Air Force at Salt Lake because Fresno is much nearer Salt Lake City than Lincoln, Nebraska. Guess we'll just have to wait for a few days to find out what's cooking.

As you can see from the stationery, I'm living in town. Burhart and I have a room at this hotel - the B.O.Q.'s at the field are full. As soon as I find out something new, I'll write and tell you and I'll telephone when I arrive in Lincoln. Burhart, Cammask and I are going to drive again, so we'll have a good trip. I've looked over some maps and I think we'll pass through some interesting country.

Must close now.

Lots of love,
Jack
