  return to war over europe

Dear Mother,

Remember when you sent me that piece from the Times Star? It was about a soldier's letter? I believe they called it, "The Censor's Dream." Anyway, I can plenty see now why he wrote such a letter. There just is hardly anything for me to write about now. But I'll be able to say more later on.

I left the good old states last Monday - even though we've only been gone for a couple of days now, we're all looking forward to the day of return. As yet I haven't seen a place that could compete with the wildest and most unsettled part of the U.S. But, we do have some advantages over you poor people at home - all the candy, cigarettes, chewing gum, etc., we want.

Cigarettes here are 5 cents a pack! Dad would like that price, I'm sure. As soon as possible, please send me some addresses. I'd like to have Dick's and Charles' especially. Also any other of my friends that are overseas. I haven't seen Alex or Bill for several days now. I guess they've gone to some other place. It sorta makes me sad. I wanted to stick with those two guys.

We get excellent food here and at very good rates. I was rather surprised - didn't expect things to be so nice. Mother, the drawing came through O.K. All of the fellows are quite pleased with the sketch. Look! Don't worry about me. I'm in the best of health and quite happy. All the boys, in fact, are feeling fine.

Here's my new address: Lt. John M. Buxton, 0-705311 A.P.O. #16305-AA-60 C/O Postmaster, New York

Lots of love,
Jack
